NASA создает новый космический телескоп [BUSINESS WIRE] Закончено строительство нового и самого мощного на сегодняшний день научного спутника NASA. Это - космический рентгеновский телескоп Chandra X-ray Observatory, который стал третьим в семействе космических обсерваторий NASA, в которое уже входит телескоп Hubble и гамма-телескоп Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. В процессе строительства этот спутник был известен под названием Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF), но в декабре прошлого года он был переименован в честь нобелевского лауреата одного из известнейших астрофизиков ХХ века индийца по происхождению Субрахманьяна Чандрасекхара (Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar), которого друзья и коллеги называли просто "Чандра" (в переводе с санскрита "луна" и "просвещенный"). В конце января спутник Chandra, длина которого составляет 13,7 м будет доставлен в космический центр им. Кеннеди, где он будет установлен на "шаттл" Columbia, старт которого намечен на 8 апреля 1999 г. Телескоп Chandra будет выведен в космос экипажем Columbia, возглавляемым Эйлин Коллинз (Eileen Collins). Зимний ветер на Марсе Космический корабль Mars Global Surveyor прибыл к Марсу в сентябре 1997 г., но только в августе 1998 г. он смог начать присылать изображения северной полярной шапки, где огромные территории песчаных дюн (на снимке слева) во время марсианской зимы покрываютс толстым слоем льда. Затем ветры выдувают в ледовых дюнах глубокие каньоны и получаетс картина, изображенная на снимке справа. И так повторяется каждую зиму. Эти изображения помогут ученым определить силу ветровой эрозии марсианской поверхности. Hесмотря на высокую скорость дующих ветров, сама атмосфера на Марсе очень тонкая. Сейчас на северной полярной шапке Марса началась весна. Через несколько недель лед, покрывающий дюны из пыли, начнет таять. За этим процессом тоже должен проследить Mars Global Surveyor. During the past week, the flight team restarted normal attitude control processing using the star camera, successfully corrected a software bug in the on-board attitude control software that caused excessive thruster activity at attitude control mode changes, and slewed the spacecraft to the modified earth point orientation that is the nominal orientation for the start of its trajectory correction maneuver. As the result of the amount of flight team support required for these three activities, the first trajectory correction maneuver, previously scheduled for Monday, January 18th, has been put off until Thursday, January 21st, with very minimal effect on the fuel required. Future activities, in addition to the trajectory correction maneuver, will include spacecraft reorientations to assess stray light impacts on the star camera performance, and reconfiguring the spacecraft state for the long term early cruise conditions. Mars Climate Orbiter Mars Climate Orbiter continues in a minimal activity cruise state with minimal Deep Space Network (DSN) tracking. The spacecraft is very healthy. Mars Global Surveyor Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) continues in the final weeks of aerobraking. With the end of aerobraking in sight, the weekly aerobraking control operations will deviate from the previous strategy of managing primarily the dynamic pressure, to a more intense assessment of the other factors contributing to the final orbit conditions. These include local mean solar time, orbital inclination, apoapsis altitude reduction increments, as well as dynamic pressure. Current aerobraking perform indicates a slightly earlier conclusion of aerobraking with the current estimate of walkout beginning on January 31st and termination of aerobraking on February 5th. At the time of this writing (1/15/99 @ 3 PM PST), MGS is in its 1079th orbit with an orbital period of 2.85 hours. The spacecraft is very healthy. Magnetometer / electron reflectometer instruments' and radio science occultation data continue to be acquired. MARS SURVEYOR 98 MISSION STATUS January 16, 1999 Mars Polar Lander Mars Polar Lander is now in its nominal attitude for early cruise, while being tracked 2-3 times per day by 34 meter Deep Space Network (DSN) stations. Now under the control of its first housekeeping command sequence, the spacecraft continues to perform well. The first planned course correction, TCM-1, has been moved from Jan. 18 to Jan. 21, to allow sufficient time to complete software updates and reconfiguration of the lander needed for early cruise. At the beginning of this week, four principal tasks were identified by the flight team that needed to be accomplished prior to executing TCM-1. These are 1) restart stellar-aided attitude determination system and verify its performance, 2) install software patch to the lander to eliminate the autopilot anomaly identified last week, 3) slew lander to the baseline attitude for early cruise, and 4) complete transition of the software system to early cruise configuraton. The first three tasks are complete, with the remaining task scheduled for completion early Tuesday morning of next week (Jan. 19). Star camera processing and the lander's stellar-aided atittude determination software were reactivated on Wednesday morning (Jan. 13), and functioned perfectly; at that time the spacecraft was still in its initial post-launch attitude. Over the course of the previous week, it was found that the lander's attitude knowledge, based soley on gyroscope computations, had drifted in error by only one degree, a testament to the extraordinary performance of the spacecraft's Honeywell ring-laser gyro system. In addition, an update to the thermal control software startup configuration file was peformed to prevent any reoccurrence of the thermal control anomaly observed the previous week. On Thursday morning (Jan. 14), the autopilot software patch was successfully loaded, and the autopilot restarted without incident. On Friday morning, the lander was commanded at 14:30 UTC to slew approximately 20 deg to bring the Earth further into the medium-gain antenna pattern, allowing high-data rate communications to be maintained well into February. This is the planned early cruise attitude. Preparations for TCM-1 are proceeding on schedule for a Jan. 21 execution date. Following this maneuver, the flight team will conduct a series of rotational maneuvers with the lander, designed to characterize the attitude envelope over which the star camera is presented with a sufficiently dark field of view allowing star pattern recognition. Mars Climate Orbiter Mars Climate Orbiter is now being monitored during a single tracking pass per day. The spacecraft's second housekeeping sequence was loaded Tuesday morning (Jan. 12) and is now operating nominally. At that time the same thermal control configuration file described for the lander above was loaded onto the orbiter, to prevent any occurrence of an anomaly like that observed on the lander, due to the commonality in the two vehicle's software systems. Although the orbiter's second course course correction, TCM-2, is scheduled for January 25, this event may well be moved, due to the additional work that was identified as needed prior to the lander's TCM-1. The flight team will establish the target date for TCM-2 on the orbiter early next week, following more assessment of the lander tasks that need to be accomplished following TCM-1. Air Force News Service Released: 15 Jan 1999 G-force scientist to test ideas for NASA By Rudy Purificato, Air Force Research Laboratory BROOKS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN) -- As the shuttle Endeavour space walkers eyed the first pieces of the new international space station recently, a Brooks Air Force Base scientist eyed the progress with plans to help speed future astronauts' return to Earth. Dr. Russ Burton, National Aeronautics and Space Administration consultant and former Air Force Research Laboratory scientist, is working with human physiology scientists here to design a centrifuge for the international space station. Frequent G-force exposure via the centrifuge while in space, which has no gravity, will help astronauts re-adapt to Earth's gravity more quickly than through previous methods used by NASA and the Russians, he said. "NASA is interested in it (space centrifuge) to prevent deconditioning in astronauts," the former Human Effectiveness Directorate senior scientist said. "I think it would be very effective. You don't have to be exposed to gravity 24 hours a day to maintain your adaptation to gravity." Burton's idea is to expose astronauts to daily doses of gravity in the space station centrifuge so astronauts will be adapted to Earth's gravity by the time they arrive back home. He first proposed his idea to the scientific community in a June 1988 Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine magazine article titled "A Human-Use Centrifuge for Space Stations: Proposed Ground-Based Studies." Past space travelers have been plagued back on Earth with weightlessness- induced physiological problems ranging from muscle atrophy to symptoms associated with osteoporosis. Retired astronaut John Blaha, who served aboard the Russian space station Mir, admitted problems walking when he returned. In fact, Blaha used a wheelchair until he was strong enough to walk on his own. "It makes no sense to be in space for six months and come back to Earth and you can't walk," Burton said. "When we (eventually) travel to Mars, which will take six months to a year to get there, what good will you be when you arrive and can't walk?" Burton said NASA has realized its current exercise program for astronauts involved in long-duration missions hasn't helped them fully re-adapt to Earth's gravity. For the past 27 years, the veterinarian-turned-scientist has been helping Air Force air crews adapt to G-force-induced, in-flight stresses. Some of Burton's most recent contributions to aviation science include his work involving cervical spine injuries pilots suffer from prolonged exposure to high G-forces. The Center for Space Microelectronics Technology was founded in 1987 to develop high-risk, high-payoff concepts and devices to enable future space missions and to enhance current and planned missions. Over 12.5 minutes have been removed from the orbit period in the past 35 drag passes. The Navigation Team has been tracking performance in terms of apoapsis altitude reduction rather than per orbit dynamic pressure or period reduction. The apoapsis altitude has been dropping at the rate of 13.5 km per drag pass compared to the desired decay rate for the reset 19 period 14.4 km per pass. The dynamic pressure 9-orbit running mean is now 0.188 N/m2 which is a little higher than the original baseline predicted, but is required to maintain the current desired trajectory. A periapsis lowering maneuver was ordered for the apoapsis portion of orbit 1104 but was removed from the uplink queue when later drag results showed more favorable apoapsis reduction. To maintain the desired apoapsis reduction, dynamic pressures of about 0.17 N/m2 must be averaged through this reset period. Predictions continue to show very slight increase in atmospheric density for the coming 2 weeks, even though the periapsis altitude continues to cycle lower Currently, sequence P1097 is controlling the S/C activities. It will be replaced later this afternoon with P1106 which will control activities starting with orbit 1106 through orbit 1114. No backup orbits were executed this period. All sequences will contained 9 primary and 4 backup orbits to maintain a prime shift built, once per day. All periapsis timing predictions have been very good therefore no special, non-scheduled sequences were required. Subsystems continue to report excellent S/C health and performance. The -Y solar array yoke has shown no change in structural performance. Attitude knowledge has been maintained throughout the period with excellent star processing. The power subsystem reports strong performance with battery discharge depths still reaching 32% each drag pass with 31% being contributed due to the 37 minute eclipse. The minimum MOLA laser temperature observed this period was 11.5°C with a slight upward trend observed due to the decreasing orbit period. The telecommunications subsystem continues solid performance although one file (P1071) radiated to the S/C this period required re-transmitting due to bit errors. There is no indication of any S/C or ground equipment problems and it is believed that the cause of the bit errors may be due to degrading station predicts as the orbit timing drifts coupled with shorter orbits.
