Assembly, Test, and Launch Operations (ATLO) activities: The Lockheed
Marting Team completed the move to the Multiple Test Facility (MTF) on
schedule -- July 11!! This move allowed weighing the spacecraft for the first
time. The mass comes in at only 0.1 Kg over the "current best estimate" we
have been carrying. The list of "best estimates" has been used over the life
of the project to collect the detailed masses of everything (and I do mean
everything) to be sure the spacecraft will fit within the launch rocket's
boost capability. We have always worked hard to keep the ship as light as
possible. But a table of the individual components can only be validated by
actually "getting on the scale." So to have a very, very close match on this
is just terrific. This is a significant accomplishment and puts the mass
margin (what the Delta rocket can launch minus what Stardust weighs) in very
good shape. Spin testing was successfully accomplished also this week
showing that the ship will be as smooth as a top and without wobble when we
separate from the rockets above the Earth's atmosphere. We want a
"ballerina" up there when the move to the trajectory away from the Earth
occurs.
The Website Camera was moved along with the spacecraft and was off the air
for a short time. Now when you are seeing the spacecraft, it is "rotated" to
a 90 degree position which is consistent with the environmental tests to
come. So you see the pink protective cover for the sample return capsules
high-speed heat shield in the foreground. That cover will be removed for
flight.

Mars Climate Orbiter:
Orbiter integration and test activities are proceeding on schedule.
The Pressure Modulator InfraRed Radiometer (PMIRR) optical chopper
assembly has been rebuilt and delivered to JPL for thermal cycle
testing. Reinstallation of the chopper on PMIRR is scheduled for
July 30; this will be followed by a Mission System Test of the mapping
phase. The orbiter pre-ship review is scheduled for August 14.
All software builds for the orbiter for all mission phases are now
complete with the delivery of build 6.5 (aerobraking phase) to
integration and test on July 24.
Mars Polar Lander:
The lander spacecraft has been thoroughly checked and it has been
determined that no damage to the vehicle occurred due to the latest
incident involving the application of power to the T0 data line.
Immediate and extensive actions have been implemented by the Project to
reduce the probability that similar incidents will occur in the
future.
The lander was powered up on July 21 and system level Electromagnetic
Compatibility testing was conducted successfully; the first such test
involving the Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer (TEGA) flight
instrument. The first lander Mission System Test of landed surface
operations was run on the vehicle very successfully. All sequences
required for thermal balance testing were run successfully on the
vehicle in preparation for the start of landed thermal balance testing
on July 25.
All software builds for the lander for all mission phases are
complete.

PIONEERING ASTRONAUT DIES AT AGE 74
The first American to climb aboard a rocket and be launched above Earth's
atmosphere has died. Astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr. passed away early July
22nd at age 74. One of NASA's "original seven" Mercury astronauts, Shepard
became the first American in space during the suborbital flight of Freedom
7 on May 5, 1961. He was subsequently grounded for several years because of
an inner-ear problem, but then recovered to command the Apollo 14 mission
in February 1971. He was the fifth human to walk on the Moon.
A MISSING LINK PULSAR
Two teams of astronomers have found what they call a pulsar "missing link."
This neutron star spins 400 times a second, sends out beams of X-rays, and
is orbiting a stellar companion. The discovery was made with NASA's Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) spacecraft. One group of researchers timed the
pulsar's spin, and the other determined the binary's two-hour orbital
period. Astronomers have thought that pulsars could be "spun up" as they
pull in surrounding material. But until now, such fast-rotating
"millisecond pulsars" have only been seen in isolation; this latest example
is the first one to be detected with a companion. Gases are being drawn off
the companion star's atmosphere into an accretion disk around the pulsar.
Besides leeching material off its neighbor, the pulsar is also blasting the
star with powerful beams of radiation expelled as the captured gases spiral
onto the neutron star. This radiation further ablates the companion's
atmosphere. Right now, the star is only about 15 percent as massive as our
Sun -- eventually it will dissipate entirely. Once that happens and the
accretion disk clears, the pulsar will no longer generate X-rays and will
gradually slow down. Details of the studies appear in the July 23rd issue
of Nature.
GALILEO SAFES ITSELF
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory reports that the Galileo spacecraft, in orbit
around Jupiter, experienced a control glitch and put itself into a safe
mode during its July 21st flyby of Europa. The command and data subsystem
that balked, causing a switch to a backup system, was restarted on July
23rd. However, it will take several days to resume science-data
transmission from the spacecraft. Nearly all data from the flyby, the fifth
of Galileo's extended mission, was lost. Galileo is scheduled to make three
more flybys of Europa; the next is September 26th. Europa is of intense
interest to planetary scientists because of Galileo's earlier discovery of
a possible subsurface ocean that could conceivably harbor some form of
life.
NEW MMT MIRROR CELL ON THE MOVE
The formerly Multiple-Mirror Telescope atop Mt. Hopkins in Arizona has been
out of service since March. The six 1.8-meter mirrors were removed to make
room for a single 6.5-meter primary, and modifications to the telescope
structure are nearly complete. On July 22nd, a day earlier than originally
planned, the mirror and mirror cell combination were separated so the
mirror cell could be transported to the mountain. The cell weighs 120
metric tons and consists of 100 arms that support the mirror. On the
morning of the 27th, the 7.5-meter-wide (25-foot-wide) support mechanism
will hog Interstate 19 as it lumbers from Tucson to Amado. The mirror
itself is to be moved to the mountain in November and aluminized in
December, with first light expected shortly thereafter. Astronomical
observations will begin early next spring.

Some daily events in the changing sky, from the editors of SKY & TELESCOPE.
JULY 26 -- SUNDAY
* Saturn is at western quadrature. For several months around this date,
telescope users can see a narrow bit of the black shadow that Saturn casts
onto its rings. Look for this black rim where the western side of the rings
passes behind Saturn's globe.
JULY 27 -- MONDAY
* The red long-period variable star W Andromedae should be at maximum light
(7th or 8th magnitude) around this date.
JULY 28 -- TUESDAY
* Look very high above the Moon around the end of twilight. The brightest
star there is Arcturus. A similar distance to the right of Arcturus is the
Big Dipper, with its bowl to the lower right and its handle to the upper left.
JULY 29 -- WEDNESDAY
* Spica shines to the lower left of the Moon this evening.
JULY 30 -- THURSDAY
* Around the end of twilight look due south, not very high, for the
orange-red supergiant star Antares. Near it and to its upper right are fainter
white stars of Scorpius.
JULY 31 -- FRIDAY
* First-quarter Moon (exact at 8:05 a.m. EDT).
AUG. 1 -- SATURDAY
* Today is Lammas, one of the four traditional "cross-quarter days"
supposedly marking the halfway points between the solstices and equinoxes.
(In fact August 7th is the actual midpoint between the June solstice and
September equinox.)
THIS WEEK'S PLANET ROUNDUP
MERCURY is hidden in the glow of sunset.
VENUS shines brightly (magnitude -3.9) low in the east-northeast during
dawn.
MARS appears near Venus in the dawn. Mars is faint (magnitude +1.6, only
about 1/160 as bright as Venus), so use binoculars. Look for it to Venus's
lower left. Watch the two planets pull closer together all week. They'll
appear just 0.9 degree from each other on the mornings of August 4th and 5th.
JUPITER rises shortly after the end of evening twilight. It's the brilliant
"star" (magnitude -2.7) shining low in the east by about 11:30 p.m. daylight
saving time. It's high in the south before dawn. Jupiter is at the
Pisces-Aquarius border.
SATURN, in eastern Pisces, rises around midnight. It's the dimmer "star"
(magnitude +0.2) far to Jupiter's lower left during early morning hours.
It's almost directly left of Jupiter by the start of morning twilight.
The two planets appear about 35 degrees apart, 3 or 4 fist-widths at arm's
length.
URANUS and NEPTUNE, magnitudes 5.7 and 7.8 respectively, are in Capricornus,
well up in the south-southeast by 11 p.m. See the finder chart in the May

PLUTO, magnitude 13.7, is near the Ophiuchus-Scorpius border in the south
right after dark. See the finder chart in the May Sky & Telescope, page 97.
